Serve Your Country as a Food Service Specialist in the Coast Guard Reserve

Food Service Specialists (FS) in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve receive top training in cooking skills, accounting, management, leadership, and the ability to organize and carry out many tasks. They will also learn equipment use and safety, recipe conversions, basic food preparation skills and terminology, baking, sanitation, purchasing, storage, nutrition and wellness cooking, and dining-facility management.

Being an FS provides excellent preparation and training in the fields of restaurant management, catering, cooking, or a variety of other jobs in the food service industries.

FSs can be found in just about every duty station available throughout the United States and various locations overseas. They serve on every Coast Guard cutter, from harbor tugs to seagoing icebreakers.

You’ll receive both classroom and on-the-job training. After initial study and some time improving your skills, further training is available in accounting, administration, and advanced culinary skills involving nutritional cooking, and advanced pastry/baking skills.

Education in food service and hospitality, or experience in food service will be helpful.

Your training will qualify you for such civilian jobs as:

• Chef
• Restaurant Manager
• Caterer
• Baker
• Cook

*All candidates applying for enlistment into the U.S. Coast Guard must meet basic age, physical, mental, civil, and citizenship eligibility criteria. Qualification for enlistment also requires passing an Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), and physical exam. Contact your local recruiter for qualifications. Reservists may be activated at times of emergency or disaster.
